Plot
Following the story of the first film, a woman (Bhumi Rajgor) keeps moving away from Chanderi when she sees her idol. While leaving the village, something strange and scary emerges from under the ground. Years later, Chanderi faces a new threat. A ghost named Sarkata (Sunil Kumar), who is a flying head without a body, starts haunting the women at night.
His headless body follows him everywhere. Sarkata only likes modern women – those who wear short dresses or smoke. He uses their long hair to seduce them, then flies into a portal and disappears. The villagers do not know the truth and think that these women have gone for some good deed.
At the same time, Rudra (Pankaj Tripathi) receives a letter from an unknown person. It contains torn pages of the Chanderi Purana and the words ‘vo aayega’ (he will come). Rudra tells Vicky (Rajkummar Rao) about it, but Vicky doesn’t take it seriously. Vicky’s father (Atul Srivastava) worries because Vicky is still a virgin. Since Vicky is not ready to get married, his father gives him money to go to a sex worker. But Vicky still misses “her” and can’t stop thinking about her.
One night, Sarkata takes Bittu’s (Aparshakti Khurana) girlfriend Chitty (Anya Singh). A beggar sees the incident and tells everyone that a ghost has taken her. Rudra sees huge footprints in the village, as if a demon is roaming there. The same mysterious woman from the first film, known as “She” (Shraddha Kapoor), returns after some time and tells Vicky about Sarkata.
Vicky, Bittu and Rudra read the torn pages and discover that the ghost is actually Chandrabhan, a cruel man from the past. He was the headman of the village and hated strong women. He believed that women should only work at home. He watched the woman dance, but she wanted to get married and live a good life.
He killed the woman when she was a dancer, beheaded her husband and burned her alive in front of her little girl. The woman came back as a ghost, killed Chandrabhan and buried him and his men deep in the ground. After the woman left Chanderi, Sarkata returned to punish modern women. The friends realize that they need a woman to stop Sarkata.
So, they go to Delhi to find Jana (Abhishek Banerjee), who was once possessed by the woman. Bittu says he won’t help because the woman lost her power when Vicky cut her braid. But Rudra believes the woman can still help.
Behind The Scenes
There were some problems in the production of ‘Stree 2’. After the huge success of the first film, some issues arose between writer-directors Raj Nidimoru and Krishna DK (also known as Raj and DK) and producer Dinesh Vijan. The fight was over the credits and rights of the film ‘Stree’. But later, they resolved the matter peacefully. The producer retained the full copyright and all rights of the film.
Although Raj and DK wrote the script of the first part, Niren Bhatt wrote the story of ‘Stree 2’. He is the same writer who also worked on ‘Bhediya’ and ‘Munjya’.
The Real Urban Legend Behind The Witch in Stree and Stree 2
What makes Stree 2 even more interesting is that it is based on a real and scary story – the old tale of Naale Baa. This strange and scary story began in Bangalore in the 1990s, before the city became known for its tech industry. People believed that an evil witch roamed the streets at night, looking for men to harm.
The scariest thing was that she used to deceive people. She could imitate the voices of their loved ones – like their mother, sister or wife. When she screamed, it sounded like someone from the family. When the man opened the door, something terrible happened. He would die within 24 hours, and only his clothes would be left.
Production
Development
In October 2018, director Amar Kaushik said that he wanted to make a sequel to Stree. Then in February 2022, actor Rajkumar Rao also shared that the team was planning to make Stree 2. In August 2022, the producers confirmed that the original writers, Raj and DK, would not write the sequel but would assist as producers. By March 2023, the team said that the film’s pre-production had begun and that they would begin shooting in July 2023. In April 2023, the producers announced that the film would release on 30 August 2024. The lead cast includes Shraddha Kapoor, Rajkumar Rao, Pankaj Tripathi, Abhishek Banerjee and Aparshakti Khurana. They are all reprising their roles from the first film.
Filming
The team began filming on 10 July 2023. They shot the first part in the same location. The shooting of the second part began in November 2023 in Chanderi.
